Irlen Method

Irlen Syndrome effects around 50% of children and adults with reading, learning, or attention problems. For some, the Irlen Method is the solution. For others, the Irlen Method is just part of the puzzle as there will be other reading/learning problems that need to be addressed. Irlen Filters (colored overlays) will make the print clear, stable, easy to see and comfortable. The Irlen Method is not a method of reading instruction or remediation but using Irlen colored overlays and lenses will allow your child to make progress and benefit from reading instruction. For many, the Irlen Method will allow you or your child to utilize your reading skills with ease and comfort. With the Irlen Method, the child and adult will be able to read for long periods without tiring, and have good comprehension.

Who Should Consider Screening?

The Irlen Method provides a unique service for some children and adults identified with reading and learning difficulties, low motivation, attention deficit disorder (ADHD), discipline problems, headaches and migraines, autism, and traumatic brain injury. The symptoms of Irlen Syndrome are wide-ranging, but our technology focuses on one core problem: the brain’s inability to process visual information. You don’t have to have a diagnosed reading or learning problem benefit from the Irlen Method. Even good readers and gifted students can be helped.

Irlen Screenings through Emerald City Therapies

Screenings are done on an individual basis.  The first appointment will result in an interview to determine reading difficulties and discomforts.  The client will complete various specialized tasks.  We will then complete overlay diagnostics to pinpoint exactly which colored overlay works best for the individual client.  No two clients are the same, and the solution is not as simple as having the student pick their favorite color.  This is different than using a place marker or bookmark.  If it is determined that the client can benefit from an overlay, two (2) appointments will be included in the Screening.  The first will be the actual screening, and then a follow up one-two months later with the use of the overlay will be required.
